The SiBike app allows bicycles to be detected and get a green light when approaching a traffic intersection, including at those with left turn signals. The system uses connected signals to detect bicycles without the need to be in a particular part of the street or dedicated city infrastructure, making cycling smoother, faster and safer.
SiBike – how does the “green wave”’ for cyclists work?
- The cyclist carries a smartphone with the SiBike app installed
- The smartphone uses GPS to determine the cyclist’s location, speed and direction of travel
- The cyclist location is used to continuously to check whether the cyclist is passing a virtual trigger point
- When this happens, the app reports the activation of the trigger point to the city traffic management center
- The traffic management center sends the corresponding command to the traffic lights
- When the cyclist approaches the traffic light, it turns green as soon as it’s safe to do so
- For left-turn lanes, there is an extra button that allows the rider to request a left turn green signal to ensure the traffic light recognizes the planned path of the rider.
Currently SiBike is only at select intersections available in Fremont, CA. More cities will be integrated soon.
